How to disable the laptop keyboard in Windows 10

Unfortunately, the keyboard is an integral part of laptop hardware, so there is no direct way to disable it through a specific button or remove its cable like a desktop keyboard. Despite that, there are many reasons that may push you to search for a way that allows you to disable it, the most important of which is that you cannot work on it because it is not good or not comfortable, and this is what prompted you to buy an external keyboard and you do not want your fingers to accidentally fall on one of the laptop keyboard keys during your work period.

Or it could be that there is a technical problem with one of the keys that is causing you to no longer be able to use it properly. Regardless of the reason, there is actually a simple method that allows you from within Windows 10 to disable the keyboard easily and we will review this method very briefly in the following lines.


We will rely on the feature of the Group Policy Editor in Windows 10, which is known under the name “Group Policy EditorBut before starting, make sure to remove any external keyboard from the laptop so as not to confuse you while disabling the basic laptop keyboard. What we will do now are only two things: the first is to disable the ability to install any drivers for the laptop keyboard Top, the second disable the laptop keyboard.

In order to do this we must first obtain the laptop keyboard ID code so that we can disable the ability to install any drivers for it from within the Group Policy Editor. Now we need to open the device manager.Device ManagerFrom the Start menu, then from within the Device Manager window, click on the small arrow icon next to Keyboards Then right-click on the keyboard name and select Properties Properties.

Now from the new window, make sure that you have selected the third tab from the top.DetailsThen under the word “Property”, search for “”Hardware IdsSee the previous picture, then stop at the first option HID Right click and choose Copy.

After that click on the Windows + R keys to open the RUN window and type in the search box this command “gpedit.mscTo open the Group Policy Editor and then click on the OK button. After that, from within the Group Policy Editor, click Computer Configurations With the left mouse button twice in a row, and from the list of new commands, click Administrative Templates Then click System Then click Device Installation Then click Folder Device Installation Restrictions.

On the right side of the window, double-click on this command with the left mouse button.Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device instance Ids“.

And now from the new window click Enabled Then at the bottom of the Options section, click Show Then from the pop-up window, left-click twice in a row in any empty space under Value and paste the command that we copied previously from the device manager window, and then click OK Then click Apply and OK.

In the last step, open the Device Manager again and click on the small arrow next to Keyboards Then right-click on the keyboard and choose from the menu Uninstall Device Then click Uninstall Then he agreed to do a computer restart. And that is all.

Remember, if you want to activate the laptop keyboard again, you will need to disable the Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device instance Ids feature in the Group Policy Editor, agree to the command, and then restart the computer, Windows 10 will automatically download the necessary drivers for the keyboard and the keyboard will work normally again.
